The Research Center for Arts and Culture started an interesting project last year that we want to share with you, as they are launching a second year of the program in DC. Art Cart is an intergenerational arts legacy project that connects aging professional artists with teams of graduate students to undertake the preparation and documentation of their creative work. According to RCAC, 61% of professional visual artists age 62+ have made no preparation for their work after their death; 95% have not archived their work; 97% have no estate plan; 3 out of every 4 artists have no will and 1 in 5 have no documentation of their work at all.
RCAC is looking to combat these trends by helping aging artists document and otherwise prepare their work with Art Cart. Making this project doubly beneficial, RCAC is employing student fellows to undertake the project, providing young artists with a chance to perfect their own documentation skills (vital for all artists) as well as network with and learn from established artists. All in all, we think this is a fantastic program and wish RCAC all the best in this endeavor, and hope to see the movement spread to more cities.
