Think waaaay back…OK, not that far back, but now that the weather is (hopefully!) warming up the 2012 holiday season seems so far behind us. Anyway, we were saying: think way back December and the Mentor/Mentee II show at Brentwood Arts Exchange, which featured-you guessed it-WPG member artists and their mentors and/or artists they have mentored. What? You didn’t get to see it? Well, now you can! Check it out on Brentwood’s Flickr album! Enjoy!

This exhibition features WPG members living or working in Maryland alongside their teachers or those they have taught. Here’s a sneak peek of the exhibtion!
WPG is excited to have two special Press Room Exhibitions in addition to our regularly scheduled October and November member and solo artist shows. In October, mark your calendars for Both Sides of The Brain, a travelling mezzotint portfolio, in the Press Room and Deron DeCesare’s Old World and New: Apart though still a Part. The Opening Reception for both these shows (and the membership exhibition) is Saturday, October 6 ,1-4 pm. In November we have Before and After the Derecho, a solo exhibition by Yolanda Frederikse in the main space, and Carol MacDonald’s Line – Structure – Pattern in the Press Room. The Opening Reception for these exhibition is Saturday, November 4, 1-4 pm.
In addition to our events, there are two fairs we’ve probably mentioned, but it doesn’t hurt to mention them again. First, is the 2nd ever (e)merge Art Fair, put on by the WPA. This fair focuses on under-represented artists and galleries “with an an energetic environment of collaboration and discovery.” This fair takes place at the Capitol Skyline Hotel in SW DC, October 4-7.
Later, in November, there is the Pyramid Atlantic Book Arts Fair. WPG will have a booth, and the full list of vendors is now online at their website. Check it out, get excited, and come to the Book Arts Fair November 16-18, 2012.
Finally, looking forward to the Winter season, Maryland artist members of WPG will join their mentors (or artists to whom they have been mentors) for Mentor/Mentee II at the Brentwood Arts Exchange. More details to follow, but know that the exhibition will run December 3-January 26 and the Opening Reception is Friday, December 7, 6-9 pm.
Last week we mentioned several grants for artists, and today we want to share a few exhibition opportunities.
First, WPG has our own on-going call for proposals for 2013 Press Room Mini Solos. These mini-solos are held in the retro-fitted vault off the side of the main gallery. It now houses a mini-press for demos (hence it’s name). Applications are due October 24.
The Brentwood Arts Exchange also has a call for exhibition proposals. There is no media or residency restrictions, the only requirement is artists must be 18 or older. You can download the guidelines for submission here. Entries are due August 31.
Finally, the American Color Print Society is hosting its 7th Annual Fall Open Show, for anyone creating, you guessed it, color prints. The deadline for entries is September 4, and you can download the prospectus here.
Our friends at Brentwood Arts Exchange are hosting a portfolio review. This review will be conducted by arts professionals such as Helen Frederick and Michael McBride, and is open to artists of all experience levels – student to established. This is your opportunity to receive critical feedback from those who have insight into the gallery, municipal, and collegial worlds.
Full details can be seen on Brentwood’s website. Hurry though-portfolio’s on CD are due this SATURDAY, May 19. Artists will receive notification of their review time (between 10 am and 4 pm on June 2) after the porfolio has been initially reviewed for completeness.
