Monotype workshop with Lee Newman and Jake Muirhead

Next Thursday, April 28 at 6 pm WPG member artist Lee Newman and Pyramid Atlantic printmaker Jake Muirhead (one of the featured artists in our October 2010 Director’s Cut exhibition) are hosting a discussion and monotype workshop at the Phillips Collection.  The evening will start with a discussion on the Philip Guston and David Smith exhibitions, with a special focus on spatial arrangement and surface texture.  Afterwards, participants will work on monotypes from still life arrangements.  Tools and materials are provided, you must register with the Phillips Collection ($35, $25 for museum members).

Lee Newman received both his MFA and BFA from American University and is the founder of the Washington Studio School.  Recipient of numerous awards including the Fulbright-Hays Fellowship and Kreeger Painting Award, Newman’s prints, paintings and drawings have been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Corcoran Gallery of Art and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor among others.

Jake Muirhead received his MFA from George Mason University and is now head technician in Pyramid Atlantic’s intaglio studio.  His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, venues including the Harnett Biennial of American Prints (Richmond, VA); International Miniature Print Exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (Norwalk, CT), the Guanlan International Prints Biennial (Guanlan, China), and several of WPG’s own National Small Works exhibitions.
